When we launched Publitio, our mission was simple: give creators and developers a fast, reliable, modern media infrastructure for the web. Today, we’re celebrating a massive achievement—our first full petabyte of data stored on Publitio.

That’s 1 PB of videos, images, audio files, documents, and digital stories entrusted to us by creators around the world.
But what does a petabyte really mean? And how far have we come since the early days of web storage?

Let’s dig in.

How Big Is a Petabyte, Really?

We all know megabytes and gigabytes—but once you enter terabyte and petabyte territory, the numbers start feeling abstract. So let’s break it down:

UnitSize
1 Kilobyte (KB)1,024 bytes
1 Megabyte (MB)1,024 KB
1 Gigabyte (GB)1,024 MB
1 Terabyte (TB)1,024 GB
1 Petabyte (PB)1,024 TB = 1,048,576 GB = 1,073,741,824 MB

To put that in perspective:

  • 1 PB = ~20 million 50-MB images

  • 1 PB = ~13 years of HD video played nonstop

  • 1 PB = ~4,000 modern laptop SSDs (256 GB each)

  • 1 PB = the equivalent of stacking printed books almost 80 km into the sky

And now… Publitio stores that much media.

🕰️ A Short History of Storage: From 2MB to 1PB

Let’s rewind to the dawn of the modern web.

1999: The Early Days

Back then, building a website meant strict limitations.
Our very first hosted website had just 2 megabytes of storage capacity.

2 MB.

That’s smaller than a single modern smartphone photo.

2005–2010: Gigabytes Become the Norm

Web hosts proudly advertised “100 MB of FREE storage!”
Soon, gigabytes became the standard for personal websites and forums.

2010–2020: The Era of Terabytes

Cloud storage exploded.
Suddenly 10 TB didn’t sound insane anymore.

Streaming platforms, social networks, and mobile-first apps multiplied global storage needs faster than ever before.

2024–2025: The Petabyte Club

Fast-forward 25 years from that tiny 2 MB website…

Publitio has officially entered the petabyte era.

This milestone isn’t just about size—it’s a symbol of:

  • The trust creators put in our platform

  • The growth of online media consumption

  • The evolution of global infrastructure

  • Our commitment to building fast, scalable, developer-friendly media services

From 2MB → 1PB (1999–2025)

🎉 This Is Only the Beginning

Reaching 1 PB is a milestone—but it’s also motivation.

In the coming months and years, we’re focused on:

  • Scaling to multiple petabytes

  • Improving global CDN performance

  • Enhancing transcoding speeds & formats

  • Delivering even stronger tools for developers and businesses

  • Innovating around AI-driven media optimization

Publitio was built for the modern, media-rich internet.
And the next petabyte? It’s coming faster than the first.
